Visiting Etihad Museum – A Journey Through UAE’s Unification

Etihad Museum

The United Arab Emirates is a young yet powerful country and its formation is a fascinating story. If you want to understand how the seven emirates united to create the UAE, the Etihad Museum in Dubai is the perfect place to visit.

The word ‘Etihad’ means ‘union,’ and this museum tells the story of how the emirates came together to form the UAE, introducing the rulers involved and the key moments that led to unification. You’ll also learn about the original nine members who took part in the discussions.

Etihad Museum is also a stunning example of architecture both inside and out. Read on to learn more.

What is Special About Etihad Museum?

Unlike traditional museums filled with artefacts, this museum has interactive digital exhibits that immerse visitors in the history of the UAE’s very existence. Etihad Museum reveals historically significant events that took place over time in simple circumstances, using the latest technology.

The location of Etihad Museum itself is historic as it sits within the grounds of Union House, the very place where the UAE’s founding rulers signed the Constitution on December 2, 1971. It’s certainly quite a contrast to the museum and a reminder of how much simpler things were then.

Designed by Moriyama & Teshima Architects, the museum’s architecture is rich in symbolism, representing the signing of the UAE Constitution. The curved roof represents the parchment and the seven golden columns symbolise the pens used to sign the unification agreement.

I loved the minimalist design inside and felt it reflected life in the past while the materials used reflect current prosperity and lifestyle. The wide open spaces and clean lines created a calming atmosphere, adding to the overall experience.

A Digital and Interactive Experience

Etihad Museum is a modern, digital space with only a few physical exhibits. The main artefacts include personal belongings of the founding rulers as well as documents but most of the displays are digital and interactive in both Arabic and English.

One of the exhibits I enjoyed was a set of cubes that you can place in the centre of a display circle to trigger interactive content on topics like defence, tradition or governance.

The film about the unification process was also very interesting, and at the end of the exhibition, visitors can take a quiz to test their knowledge, so pay attention!

Beyond the Exhibits – What Else is There?

A modern, well-lit exhibition hall inside Etihad Museum featuring interactive displays and digital screens showcasing the history of the UAE. The curved walls and ceiling add to the elegant ambiance.

The museum is spacious and quiet, making it an enjoyable place to explore at a relaxed pace. It also features a library, an education centre, a temporary exhibition hall and a cafe. (The cafe is temporarily closed.)

Outside, visitors can explore a small garden with a water feature, leading towards the flagpole and Union House, where they can take time to reflect on the UAE’s journey to unity. There is also a display of traditional gates for those like me who love gates and doors!

On weekends (Saturday and Sunday, from 11 am to 5 pm), the museum hosts free community activities suitable for all ages. These activities change weekly and include arts and crafts or cultural workshops.

During my visit, I took part in a clay painting activity where I created a fridge magnet with a stamp of Sheikh Zayed on it. Others had created falcons, which they then decorated.

Etihad Museum is located in Jumeirah 1, Dubai, near the waterfront. The easiest way to get there is by car and the museum has a large underground car park, which is free for visitors.

Alternatively, take the metro to Al Jafiliya Metro Station (Red Line), followed by a short taxi ride. You can also take a bus to ENOC Al Dhiyafah stop (routes 7, C10, X13, X28, and 8).

Is Etihad Museum Worth Visiting?

Yes! Etihad Museum is worth visiting for those interested in the history and development of the UAE. For history enthusiasts, it provides in-depth insight into the UAE’s formation.
