Al Rolla Square Park is another well-loved green space known for its beautiful banyan trees, which give the park its name, and smaller play areas. It’s a popular gathering spot, especially during the evenings and weekends.

Green Belt Park is a ladies-only space with lush greenery, seating areas and a walking track. Other parks and green spaces you can visit in the city of Sharjah include Al Majaz Waterfront, Al Nakheel Oasis, the Islamic World Garden and Al Mureijah Garden in the Heart of Sharjah.

Some of these are free and some cost just AED 2 to enter, making them accessible to all.

36. Have Fun, Dine and Learn about Nature at Aljada

Head down to Madar Aljada, one of Sharjah’s newest destinations for leisure, dining, shopping and fun. Designed by Zaha Hadid Architects, the complex has several attractions.

Playscape is a large outdoor play area with fun activities, including a climbing wall, splash zones and a skate park for all ages. Next to it is Zad, a popular food truck district with a wide variety of food options, and a free drive-in cinema. Madar Aljada also hosts festivals and open-air farmers’ markets throughout the winter months.

Nearby is Shajar, a tree nursery that doubles as an educational space, offering guided tours and workshops. After exploring, visitors can unwind at The Hut, a cosy café hidden among the trees.

Whether you want to have fun with the family, grab a bite, or simply relax in green surroundings, Aljada has something for everyone, and better still, much of it is free!

37. Have Coffee or Dine at Al Zawaya Walk

Al Zawaya Walk is a hidden gem in Sharjah City. Located on University City Road, it has a mix of cafes and restaurants. Although small, it has a picturesque lake surrounded by pathways, benches, and bridges, which make it a nice spot to enjoy a coffee or meal outdoors. There’s also a small indoor play area for children.

Coffee shops open early if you’re heading for breakfast and restaurants open later and offer Thai, Lebanese, Indian and Sushi cuisines, burgers and more.

Al Zawaya Walk’s scenic setting and the range of cafes and restaurants make it a nice spot to stop off if you’re in the area, grab a bite and enjoy the view. Look out for special events in the evenings, especially during festivals and holidays.

38. Learn about Scholars at Islamic World Garden

The Islamic World Garden in Sharjah is an educational park, celebrating the achievements of Muslim scholars. Twenty-four granite monuments, each dedicated to a different scholar, from astronomers to engineers, display information about their contributions. They lead to the Islamic Cultural Capital Monument on one side and the Arab Culture Capital Monument on the other.

The gardens are nicely landscaped and contain fountains, benches, play areas and two restaurants. See more at Islamic World Garden. Combine this with a visit to the House of Wisdom or the Holy Quran Museum.

39. Shop Till you Drop at Al Zahia City Centre or Sahara Mall

For a shopping spree in Sharjah, head to Al Zahia City Centre or Sahara Mall. Both malls offer a wide range of international and local stores, making them perfect for fashion, electronics and beauty shopping.

Beyond retail therapy, you’ll find plenty of dining options with restaurants and cafes to suit every taste. For entertainment, both malls also have cinemas and play areas, making them great spots for families to spend the day, especially in the hotter months. Al Zahia City Centre also has an outdoor plaza with a play area, splash areas, seatin and food trucks for the cooler months.

40. Ride or Watch a Horse Show at Sharjah Equestrian and Racing Club

Horse fanatics can head to the Sharjah Equestrian and Racing Club for riding lessons in their indoor and outdoor training arenas and young ones can enjoy outdoor pony rides.

If you prefer to spectate, go along and watch show jumping championships, flat races, dressage competitions or the Sharjah Arabian Horse Festival. There’s always a lively atmosphere! To see the events calendar, visit the SERC website.

41. Learn about Other Cultures at The Africa Institute

The Africa Institute is truly a hidden gem in Sharjah, offering a range of cultural and educational activities. It regularly hosts events, conferences, lectures, film screenings and performances that explore African culture and its global connections.

Local residents can also take advantage of a unique opportunity to learn the languages of Amharic, Arabic, Hausa and Kiswahili and learn about culture at the same time. If you’re not a resident, online options are also available.

If you have an interest in the arts or humanities or like learning about other cultures, this one is for you. Keep an eye on their website for upcoming events and workshops or sign up for their newsletter.

42. Watch Sports Events or Play – Cricket, Football, Powerboat, Jetski

If you love sports, there are plenty of activities to try or events to watch in Sharjah. Cricket is very popular in the region, and Sharjah Cricket Stadium is well-known for its international matches and local tournaments. Football fans can watch Sharjah FC and other local teams, such as Al Bataeh and Khorfakkan, with matches hosted in Sharjah and across the emirate.

If watersports are more your thing, you can rent a jetski at Al Mamzar Beach or watch the annual UAE Jet Ski Marathon Championship at Al Heera Beach. For something more exciting, don’t miss the F1H2O Grand Prix of Sharjah in December at Al Majaz, where powerboats race across Khalid Lagoon. This is my favourite sports event, and it’s free too.

For horse riding or horse shows, golf, archery and shooting, see the dedicated sections of the Equestrian Club and the Golf and Shooting Club.

From cricket and football to archery and powerboat racing, Sharjah has plenty of ways for you to stay active or enjoy sports as a spectator.

43. Go Fishing

Fishing is a popular activity in Sharjah, with nearly 20 km of coastline and several dedicated areas. Popular spots include Al Khan Lagoon, Heera Beach and Al Hamriyah, where you can see various species.

However, you do have to have a fishing permit, which residents can apply for at Souq Al Jubail. You also need to check local rules about seasons, fishing spots and the types of fish you can catch.

The best time to go fishing is in the cooler months but you can also go early morning and later in the day.

44. Attend a Poetry or Theatrical Event

With its strong emphasis on culture, it’s not surprising that Sharjah is home to the Cultural Palace, Sharjah National Theatre, the Theatrical Association, Arab Theatre Institute, Sharjah Performing Arts Academy, Al Majaz Amphitheatre and Poetry House.

Although many of the plays and poetry evenings are in Arabic, they’re still fascinating to watch or hear even if you don’t know the language well and give you an insight into Arabic culture. I’ve been to some great events at Al Majaz Amphitheatre and at great prices too. In fact, some were even free!

If you know Arabic, consider signing up for workshops. Youngsters can also take courses in English at the Performing Arts Academy.

45. Admire Arabic Architecture

Sharjah is the perfect place to explore Arabic architecture. Almost all government buildings are built in Arabic style, as well as some museums, the main library, theatres, universities and institutes and I never stop being mesmerised by them!

Although you can see Arabic architecture around the city, there are some particular spots where you can see several buildings in one place. Visit Al Khan government buildings, Sharjah Cultural Square and University City to see some striking buildings. My favourites are the majestic-looking Sharjah Municipality Building and Sharjah Chamber of Commerce. See more on Arabic Architecture in Sharjah.

This collage showcases architectural highlights in Sharjah, UAE, featuring intricate Arabic design elements. The images display grand structures with domes, detailed arches, and ornate facades, including a central building with a large golden dome and a statue of an open book, symbolizing knowledge and heritage. The vibrant arches and geometric patterns reflect traditional Islamic architectural influences, blending elegance with cultural significance.

46. Move to Sharjah!

Ok, this one may seem a bit extreme! For those of you who are already resident in the UAE, having seen what Sharjah has to offer, especially in culture and more affordable activities, why not take a look at the many new residential areas? It’s ideal if you work remotely too.

The new communities include Aljada, Nasma, Al Zahia, all inland (less humid), and Ajmal Makan waterfront living at Al Hamriyah and Maryam Island on Al Khan Lagoon. Another upcoming project is Anantara on Al Heera Beach.

For sustainable living, look at Al Masaar and Sharjah Sustainable City. Al Buhairah is a well-established and popular location for apartment living with many facilities nearby.
